Housework, yes or no?
I apologise about the title of this blog post, but… I need to know the answer.
Let me explain.
I have recently started working again after 9 years being a full time mother. I started working only 1 hour a day to get back into the swing of things. Doesn’t sound like much of an issue, but it was smack bang in the middle of the day. After the school run, I didn’t have enough time to do a full weekly shop in the morning, get back, pack away and then get to work on time, so, shopping was a mad dash, grab what you think you might need and get back quick. I always seem to pick up washing powder???
Aside from that, doing housework also seemed like a mad dash, keeping on top of daily stuff and never getting the chance to wipe the chocolate handprint (left by my youngest) on the underside of the sink. I only saw it when I sat on the loo and consequently found myself saying – multiple times - “I must get a cloth and clean that” Well, who goes for a wee with a cloth in hand? Not me that’s for sure.
I had a day off work (youngest was poorly), so while he was flaked out, I thought I would get on and do those jobs I never seem to have time for. One of which was the dusting in my want-to-be-teenage daughter’s bedroom. I had been asking her to do this for a number of weeks, but the dust only thickened. There I am, rubber gloves on, dust wipes in hand, sneezing, I mean dusting away. I don’t have time to take pride in this momentous achievement because my poorly boy is stiring and I need to ‘Get This Done!’
I did it. I looked at the objects all back in their place. The black stereo, black once more, as opposed to a mat dark grey. The t.v. screen showing its vibrant colours again. Did I take the time to be proud of my achievements then? The answer was no. It was just another job done with a longer list to tackle. What was worse, when my daughter came home, she didn’t even notice either. No one did!
So it leaves me with one question, why do I (most people) get hung up on doing housework? I mean as soon and the family are home, they undo it all, wear your freshly washed and ironed clothes and put them back in the washing basket. Why do we put so much time and effort into having the house clean (by no means do I mean tidy, I have children)?
Well that’s my thought for today. Please feel free to leave your answer in a comment below. It would be lovely to find the answer, for my own sanity.
Until next time, take care.
